Description
The 2022 Memorial Sovereign range is a collection of gold coins that commemorate the platinum jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II and the accession of her son, King Charles III. The set includes three proof-finish UK Sovereigns, each struck in 22-carat gold and weighing a total of 13.96 grams, with an actual gold weight of 12.79 grams or 0.4112 troy ounces. The coins are presented in a premium wooden display case with a numbered certificate of authenticity enclosed, and only 1,500 sets are available.
Sovereigns have a long history of being issued to mark royal milestones, and the Royal Mint has often offered special designs in anniversary years during Queen Elizabeth II’s reign. For the 2022 Platinum Jubilee, the Royal Mint commissioned two new designs by British artists to replace the traditional image of Saint George by Benedetto Pistrucci. The first design features a portrait of King Charles III by sculptor Martin Jennings, who studied photographs of the king before modelling his profile in plaster. The portrait shows Charles facing left, in contrast to his mother, who faces right on her coins, and without any symbols of his royal status.
The reverse design of the 2022 Charles III Sovereigns features the Royal Arms, a potent heraldic symbol used by both the royal family and the British government. The interpretation of the Royal Arms is the work of Jody Clark, known for his fifth and final definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II. Clark’s design includes the four constituent countries of the United Kingdom: England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, surrounded by flourishes and national flower emblems. The date, 2022, is featured on a scroll below the words “DIEU ET MON DROIT.”
The 2022 Memorial Sovereign range is a poignant collection that pays tribute to Queen Elizabeth II’s remarkable seventy years on the throne and marks a historic moment in the transition to King Charles III’s reign. The set is available in a range of sets, denominations, and finishes, and only a limited number of sets are available. The new designs by Martin Jennings and Jody Clark provide a point of continuity in this time of royal transition and offer a unique opportunity to own a piece of history.
