Included in The Royal Mint’s 2023 Coronation range is a commemorative Crown coin, denominated at Five Pounds, which has traditionally been used to celebrate royal events such as coronations, birthdays, jubilees, and births. The reverse design of the new 2023 Charles III Coronation Crown was created by heraldic artist Timothy Noad, who is known for his work on the reverse of the Sovereign, including the 2002, 2005, and 2022 gold coins. Noad’s inspiration for the 2023 Coronation design came from a recent visit to the Tower of London to view the Crown Jewels that will be used in King Charles’ coronation ceremony.
On May 6, 2023, Charles III will be crowned at Westminster Abbey, becoming the King of the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth realms after the passing of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, in September 2022. This event will mark the first royal coronation in roughly three generations. To commemorate this significant national occasion, The Royal Mint has announced the release of an extensive range of official commemorative coins, which were designed by a trio of talented engravers. The 2023 Charles III Coronation range includes £5 coins, a new 50p, and troy ounce coins made of silver and gold. There will also be a special gold Sovereign struck on the day of the King’s coronation, and coins in the range will feature a new portrait of Charles III, specifically created for this occasion. While previous British coronations have been celebrated with new coinage, this collection is the most comprehensive ever produced, with options available for a wide range of UK coin collectors.
In late 2022, the first definitive coin portrait of King Charles was unveiled to much excitement. British sculptor Martin Jennings, known for his large sculptures of UK literary figures, created this significant design before Charles ascended to the throne. The portrait shows The King looking left and has already been featured on coins in the 2022 Queen Elizabeth II Memorial range, as well as other commemorative and circulating coins.
Despite being in use for only a few months, there is already a new design to appreciate. Coins in the 2023 Charles III Coronation range will showcase a brand new crowned portrait, personally approved by His Majesty. This design features Charles wearing the so-called Tudor Crown, a stylised representation of the real Tudor Crown, which was destroyed in the seventeenth century but is still used in heraldry, including as part of The King’s royal cypher.
This new portrait marks the first time in several centuries that a British King has appeared crowned on their currency. While Queen Elizabeth II and Queen Victoria were depicted wearing crowns or diadems on some coins, male monarchs have been portrayed without crowns on UK money since the time of King Charles II. However, some international coins feature Charles III’s predecessors wearing a royal crown, including his grandfather, King George VI.
