Krugerrand 1oz Gold Coin – Mixed Dates

The Gold Krugerrand, a South African gold coin minted at Rand Refinery near Johannesburg since 1967, is widely recognized as a bullion coin. It is available in various sizes, including 1 ounce, 1/2 ounce, 1/4 ounce, and 1/10 ounce.

The Krugerrand gold coin has a fineness of 916.7 and obtains its reddish color and scratch resistance from its alloy composition with copper.

Named after South African president Paul Kruger (1882-1902) and the country’s currency, the “Rand,” the Gold Krugerrand features Kruger’s portrait on the front and a springbok antelope, the emblematic animal of the Republic of South Africa, on the back. Although it lacks any currency designation, the Gold Krugerrand holds legal tender status. Its value is determined based on the daily price of gold, with the London Goldfixing serving as a reference.

In its initial three years of production, the Krugerrand gold coin had an annual output of less than 50,000 ounces. Subsequently, production increased fourfold, peaking at 6 million ounces during the oil crisis. The imposition of apartheid sanctions in 1986 led to a significant decline in production, which persisted until the embargo on imports was lifted in 1999.

Other Information

First minted in 1967 by the South African Mint, the name ‘Krugerrand’ comes from the name president at the time Paul ‘Kruger’, and the unit of currency of South Africa the ‘Rand’. Some countries banned the importing of Krugerrands during the 70’s and 80’s due to the association with the apartheid government but is now one of the most recognised Gold coins among collectors and investors alike.
After its conception at the end of the ’60s, the Krugerrand was being minted at a rate of approximately 40,000 units per year, this continued to grow until 1978 when a record breaking 6 million coins were produced.
