For the coronation of King Charles III on May 6th, 2023, a specially designed commemorative gold one eighth sovereign coin has been announced. This coin is significant because it is the first of its kind to be produced for the coronation of a British monarch in over 200 years of gold sovereign history. The event is a momentous occasion for Britain and is steeped in tradition and celebration, with many people eagerly anticipating where they will be during the crowning ceremony. This historic moment marks the first time a British monarch has been crowned in the 21st century, with the last one being Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. The world has changed significantly since then, but the importance of ceremonial traditions remains just as strong.

King Charles III’s coronation is steeped in history, with traditions dating back to William the Conqueror’s coronation in 1066, and the continuation of these traditions is in keeping with the King’s wish to “look towards the future, while being rooted in longstanding traditions and pageantry.” To commemorate this historic occasion, a special commemorative gold one-eighth sovereign coin has been created, featuring the new ‘Coronation Emblem’ specifically designed for the King.

The Coronation Emblem pays tribute to The King’s love of the natural world and to the four countries of the United Kingdom, bringing together the rose of England, the thistle of Scotland, the daffodil of Wales, and the shamrock of Northern Ireland into the shape of the St Edward’s Crown. The design is the first of its kind to be featured on a one-eighth sovereign coin. Additionally, the mintage is incredibly modest, adding to the coin’s value and rarity.

This is the first time in history that a British monarch’s coronation is being marked with a special commemorative design gold one-eighth sovereign coin, making it an historic moment celebrated by an historic first. The coin has been authorized by Ascension Island and approved by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office and Buckingham Palace, making it a wonderful tribute to the King’s coronation.
